I posted a news article on the Liz Phair Forum about the new CDs from the songs recorded by Judee Sill before her death in 1979.  It was originally just a Liz Phair news article.

It was pointed out that Judee Sill was a remarkable musician.

Here is the link to where 30 MP3s are posted: Judee Sill demos and unreleased recordings.

Her old albums have been rereleased on CD and some of the songs meant for a third album are on a 2-CD set.

I don't have them yet, but I will.

Please share your thoughts...

Here is the article from the Washington Post: A Brief Life, an Enduring Musical Impression

Here is the link to the original topic under the Liz Phair Forum: Judee Sill Article on Yahoo.

This has been a bit tricky: getting the two threads cross-linked.

I've listened to the live BBC recordings.  Interesting stuff.  She seems quite religious.  I don't mind that, necessarily, but it's strange to hear someone sing so passionately on the subject.  (Weird because I never listen to music like that.  I'm sure there's plenty of it.)

Her melodies DO remind me of Liz Phair's, lacking simple structure.  That's a good thing.

There is also a fan created myspace page with some album tracks available for streaming: http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendID=98875296 and some videos of Sill up on youtube.

I believe that I remember somewhere that Liz prays daily.  If you listen to the music, there are references to praying and higher powers that be in Liz's music also.  It's just not as overt as in Judee's music.

I don't go in for your typical "Christian" music, but I do consider myself a Christian.   That's what I get for being the grandson of a Baptist minister, I guess.

The way that Judee integrates it into her music is interesting and not all that obnoxious.

The Judee Sill thread from the Liz Phair Chat section was one of the threads deleted in the latest purge.

We lost Jeremy Engle's comments.   Damn!

I've ordered Abracadabra today (as also reported in LP Forum).  I'll post a followup when the disk comes in.

The disk shipped on 1/31/2007 and I'm still waiting for the delivery.  I guess that I should have spent a little more for a more prompt delivery.

That's funny, I was just thinking -- about 30 seconds before I saw your post -- that I never did order the second album, Heart Food (which is contained in its entirety on Abracadabra, along with some other stuff from that period). I guess I should grab a copy before it becomes harder to find.

You'll have to post your thoughts on the Judee Sill record -- it's like a buried treasure. The ghost of Sill will enrich your life considerably in the coming weeks, my friend.

It arrived today.

Very nice.  Much nicer than the demos on the Judee Sill demo site.  Her voice is very mellow.  Guitar playing very well done.

Some of the music styles surprised me--it seems all over the place.  I'm up to track 13 on the first Disc.

More later when I finish my first listen.

I probably need to writeup my assessment of the whole thing.  I've listened to it a few times.  The extra tracks almost double the number of tracks that were present on the two albums.  In many cases, different versions of songs from those two albums.

Really nice music.

My mom listens to Christian pop.  I know bad religious music.  This is uber good.  I'm in love.
