White Babies.  AKA -- Black Market White Baby Dealer.  Most people think it's a racial song.  They would be correct, but for the wrong reason.  More than a racial song, White Babies is a Nature versus Nurture song.  Liz, being adopted, certainly has a lot to say on the subject of parenthood by proxy.  While I'm sure I'll never truly know the lesson to be learned from this song, I would still ask a question.  Take the following verse:

I come post-production
I dont need natal care
Im already fully assembled
Down to the very last part, its all there
So take me to your family
So take me to your home
Buddy, take me in as your next generation
And Ill take you out of the lost one and into mine

I lifted these lyrics from some random lyric site.  My question involves the last line.  Is it:

"And Ill take you out of the LOST one and into mine"

Q: could she literally mean the "Lost Generation" -- the phrase coined by Gertude Stein to connote Zelda Fitgerald & her literary friends?  (Don't get me wrong, I love Zelda, and totally think she was framed, and I'm sure that Liz feels the same way.)  Much as I'd like to think so, I gotta assume otherwise.  The lyric is probably meant to mean:

"And Ill take you out of the LAST one and into mine"

Which could mean, "you people couldn't have children, but now MY bloodline takes over.  Get on board."

The last line is actually "And I'll take you out with the loans, ten million to one.

I know -- weird, right?

I never knew what she sang there.  But THAT makes less sense than even I expected.  Yes, very strange.

Why do I think that if you asked her, point blank, what it meant, that you wouldn't get a straight answer?

Ah, the mysteries...

One of the things that I hadn't considered before is the particular position that Liz was in.

She was adopted into an affluent family.  They certainly tried to make her feel welcome, to make her part of the family.  I wonder if her fellow school mates looked down on her because of her background.  You know, that blue blood snottiness that sometimes rears its ugly head.

She always seemed to have some problems with it, and some of it was all internal (she talks about finding her identity on the sections on iTunes originals), but I would guess that part of it was also external, but not her parents.

Okay, this is what I think.
I think that if she's saying "and I'll talke you out of the old one, and into mine" that she means that since she is adopted, she's saying that if you accept her as the next generation while she's adopted, she'll take you out of the old one, which is where the family like stopped when she got adopted, and into hers, which is the next generation.
