My daughter said that she just found out last week about this.

I can't say that I'm really surprised, but it does affect some really important Liz sites:

  • Mesmerizing, by Ken Lee
  • Wild and Unwise

The purpose of this note is to make sure that everyone is aware of this impending change.  It's possible that Ken pays for the service, but I really don't know and it would be nice to just make sure that we know what's going on.

My daughter is looking at hostgater (I haven't checked out this site and I don't know the spelling).  I  assume that whatever she's leaning towards is what I'll probably switch to myself.

Anyways, here is the thread to make announcements about what you plan to do with your geocities site.

Cheers!

Here are weblinks that are directly affected (from my own GirlySound page):

Mesmerizing: Girly Sound Page
Wild & Unwise: Girly Sound Page

Here is the wikipedia entry for Girly Sound that would need updated links, if and when this happens:

Wikipedia: Girly Sound

Not only are the Girly Sound pages affected, but the entire Mesmerizing and Wild & Unwise websites.

I'll volunteer to create a "links" page from the top Girly Sound page, if someone will integrate it into this site.

That should be the first step.

How about purchasing a domain name... such as...

 http://mesmerizingtoo.com

which IS available, and then move the content. No biggie.

There's two parts of this:  the domain name, as you've said, and somewhere to host the web services.  Fortunately, these aren't really big costs, but it depends on your budget.

Ken Grygienc ran the Refuse Resist site (aka camp), but didn't have the funds to continue with that so it all went down the tubes.  Twas a shame, because it was one of those meeting places for many of the oldtimers.  I still have other connections with solar, cat, and crash,  but it's not the same as the old "camp"  message board.

I'm probably going to setup a replacement for my stupid little site.  I don't have the visitors to justify expending the money and I haven't felt the need to spend the time to make something all that useful.

Anyways, Ken, I hope you setup a replacement.  I'm sure that we can get the myspace page and the facebook fan page updated to  point to  wherever you end up.  Please note that what  you've done has been very valuable to the community and we hope that it continues past this hiccup.

The shutdown date is Oct 26, 2009.  This date was announced this week.

Even if the sites are geocities premium sites, as I think Mesmerizing is, geocities still goes away and will be replaced by a premium yahoo page, so URLs WILL CHANGE.

I have 3 geocities sites and I'm in the process of backing everything up.  I just managed to exceed my hourly limits.

I already have a replacement free service setup, but none of my files have been uploaded.

I've read the instructions for the Geocities Plus accounts and they are now recommending that people with Geocities Plus accounts DO NOTHING until the change happens on Oct 26.  Yahoo will redirect the pages over to a new host.

I'm pretty sure that the instructions earlier implied that Geocities Plus accounts would need to do something before the transition.

Mesmerizing and Wild & Unwise should be automatically transitioned over to the new host, but eventually, the addresses will change.
